How Massage Therapy Can Ease Your Anxiety

It is normal for you to feel anxiety from time to time. For example, you may feel anxious before you make a presentation. However, it is not normal for you to feel anxious all of the time. If you have chronic anxiety, then it is a good idea for you to go to the day spa. There are several ways that a spa treatment can alleviate your stress.

Stimulate the Parasympathetic Nervous System

The sympathetic nervous system is what stimulates your flight or fight response. It causes a rapid heart rate, sweating and stress response. Your parasympathetic nervous system has the opposite effect. A massage therapy session allows you to get instant stress relief. These benefits can last for long after you leave the massage parlor.

Lower Cortisol

Cortisol is the hormone that triggers the stress response in your body. Aromatherapy and massage can lower your stress level. There have been studies done to show that a trip to the licensed massage therapist can lower your cortisol level. One study done by the Mayo Clinic showed that a 60-minute massage can lower cortisol levels by 30 percent. There was another study done that involved people who suffered from anxiety. They were asked to get a massage every week for 12 weeks. The results of the study showed that they were less anxious after getting a massage for several weeks.

Better Sleep

There is a direct link between feeling anxious and sleep deprivation. People who are anxious often do not sleep well at night. You are also more likely to feel anxious if you don't get the proper amount of sleep. You will sleep a lot better if you get massages on a regular basis.
