Tips for Healthier Sleep

Getting proper and restful sleep is essential to having a healthy lifestyle. Adults should be getting anywhere between 7-9 hours of rest each night and there are serious side effects if this minimum is not reached. Lack of rest can lead to fatigue, moodiness, irritability, forgetfulness, depression, and an inability to concentrate. When we are asleep, our bodies slow down and make vital repairs to all of our systems. Because of this, it is vital that one gets the proper rest they need. Here are some tips for getting the good and healthy rest your body needs: 1. Create the right environment for your night in bed. This can be done by making some subtle changes to your environment such as adding blackout curtains, investing in a good pillow and cover, and spraying your bedding with lavender or chamomile essential oils. It is also important that you limit blue-light technology such as cell phones and computers at least an hour before rest. The light from electronic screens tricks your brain into thinking that it is still daytime, making it harder to fall asleep.
2. Get comfortable. Scientists have discovered that sleeping in colder temperatures actually helps us sleep longer and deeper. In many cases, people choose to go commando, although this is not always recommended. There are plenty of special fabrics designed by multiple companies that aid in recovery during rest and which maintain healthy circulation. 3. What you eat matters. Try and limit your caffeine and sugar consumption several hours before bed, as these are the prime culprits in reducing one's quality of rest. Instead, try and focus on foods such as bananas, which are high in magnesium and aid in the production of serotonin. Tart cherries are also another great option as they are natural carriers or melatonin, the chemical our brains produce to make us pass out.
