Fibromyalgia and Massage

Posted: February 6th, 2012

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that affects about one in fifty Americans. It is a common syndrome in which a person has a long-term, body-wide pain and tenderness in the joints, muscles, tendons and other soft tissues. It has also been linked to fatigue, sleep problems, headaches, depression and anxiety. Possible causes of fibromyalgia are physical or emotional traumas, abnormal pain response, sleep disturbances or infection (although none have been identified). Because the cause is not yet understood, there is no known cure for fibromyalgia.
Since experimental drugs can be dangerous and can have severe side effects, many people with fibromyalgia are turning to holistic treatments to help manage their symptoms. Many people try physical therapy, exercise and fitness programs and massage to help control their symptoms. Massage is natural and safe treatment that can help alleviate some of the symptoms associated with fibromyalgia. Massage allows for people to become completely relaxed. It is proven to help with pain relief, decrease stiffness and fatigue and improve the quality of sleep. Massage can also lower cortisol levels. This can lead to lower anxiety and depression.
