Can You Use Body Lotion on Your Face?

Posted: November 4th, 2019

Sometimes it seems pointless to buy two different types of lotion- one for your face, and one for the rest of your body. Face moisturizers and body lotions are not made equally though, and putting a thick lotion made for dry elbows on your delicate facial skin may cause some issues.

First of all, the skin on our face is much thinner and more packed with sebaceous glands than other parts of our bodies. If you apply a lotion that works well for hydrating your hands, you may end up breaking out or finding your face becoming very oily. Face moisturizer is formulated specifically for skin problems, like acne, scarring, and wrinkles. If you have acne-prone or sensitive skin, body lotion doesn't take those things into account, so it will probably cause some issues.

When it comes to skincare, you want to find a personalized regimen, but you don't have to drop hundreds of dollars on products. Instead, talk to an esthetician or a dermatologist about your skin concerns. They'll be able to help you find the best face moisturizer (and probably body lotion too) for your skin type. Drug stores offer dozens of different creams, serums, and lotions, all at different price points, so you'll be sure to find the right product there.

You can also try visiting a day spa. After having your facial, the esthetician or employees can show you some of the products that were used, and if there was something you liked, you can buy that. If you're not sure you can afford a trip to a day spa, you can always just do your own research on products.

Although sometimes when outside the bottle, all lotions look the same, it's important to remember that body lotion can irritate all skin, not just sensitive skin. Skincare can be a fun and relaxing part of your routine, and investing in healthy skin now also means investing in healthy skin in the future.
