All The Benefits of Vitamin C

Posted: July 1st, 2020

Everyone's heard of the benefits vitamin C, or ascorbic acid brings to nearly every bodily system. There's evidence that it can shorten the length of the common cold and offer protection from cancer. But the promise of this vitamin for health and wellness goes well beyond even this.   One reason for ascorbic acid's powers is that it's an antioxidant and helps fight damage from molecules known as free radicals. These molecules are what scientists call "unhappy," as they lack electrons in their outer shell. Because of this, they tear electrons from other molecules and damage them. Vitamin C gives these free radicals an electron and makes them harmless.

Benefits of Ascorbic Acid

Skin Care

This vitamin is excellent for the care of the skin and is in fact a part of many skincare products. Ascorbic acid's main function is to help the body synthesize collagen, which is a protein that is found all over the body. Collagen keeps skin youthful and stretchy and strengthens its protective qualities. Some day spa estheticians go beyond giving their clients vitamin-containing facials and actually give them Vitamin C IV drips as part of their spa treatments.

The Immune System

Ascorbic acid supports the immune system by helping the body make white blood cells and protecting them from damage from free radicals. White blood cells protect the body from infection by attacking and removing pathogens such as bacteria and viruses.

The Skeletal System

Because of its usefulness in helping the body make collagen, ascorbic acid supports the tendons and ligaments that connect the bones to muscles and to each other. The vitamin is important in the repair and maintenance of bones, teeth, and cartilage and is essential in wound healing.

The Blood

Ascorbic acid is also crucial in allowing the body to absorb iron, which is carried around the body by the red blood cells. Good levels of the vitamin also prevent anemia and bruising.
