fall skin careJust like you change the clothes in your wardrobe, your skin care routine should change with the seasons as well. The following offers some guidelines for updating your skin care routine so your skin will remain soft and healthy throughout the fall and winter.

1. In the fall the air becomes drier and the skin more quickly loses moisture. This means changing your body cleanser as well as your moisturizer. Hydrate your skin in the morning, before going to bed, and as soon as you get out of the shower. One of the best ways to hydrate your skin is to hydrate the inside. You’ll need just as much water during the cooler months as the hot and humid ones.

2. Many people use a light moisturizer in the summer months when the air tends to be more humid. By October the air is thinner and dryer and a different type of moisturizer is needed. Include a thicker cream in your skin care routine in the fall, something with Vitamin E.

3. Don’t think of exfoliation as drying out the skin. A light exfoliation will get rid of summer damage from chlorine, salt water, and too much sun. It will prepare the skin to more readily absorb the moisture it needs to say healthy in the winter.

4. Start using a thicker hand cream instead of thinner lotion during the fall months. Also, get in the habit of wearing gloves. When neglected, our hands can age as quickly as our faces.

5. Finally don’t forget sunscreen in the fall and winter months. Just because you can’t get a sunburn doesn’t mean dangerous UV rays aren’t damaging to the skin. Even exposure to excessive wind can wreak havoc on the skin.
